THE C-START PHENOMENA

In 2016, I collaborated with MIT professor Michael Tryantafillou in order to design an illustration that was able to explain the “C-Start” phenomena. When threatened, small fish exhibit a carefully choreographed and precisely timed escape motion: the C-start. By bending into a ‘C’ shape, they entrap with their body a large mass of water, which is then pushed downstream with a tail flip, imparting impressive accelerations to the fish. The central piece is a hand sketched fish that seamelessly merges with the title, emphazising the role of the "C". It captures the exact moment when the fish, threatened, bends itself into a 'C' shape entraping with its body a ball of water.
